In the year 1766, the British government gave Samuel Touchett a land grant for twenty thousand acres in the Miami region. Touchett attempted to establish a plantation, but a lack of finances led to his early failure. In the early eighteen hundreds, the first permanent settlers came to the area. A successor of the New Smyrna colony, one Pedro Fornells, came to Key Biscayne to comply with the stipulations of his Royal Grant for the island. He left for a time, leaving a caretaker there and when he returned, he found people staying there unofficially. These people were moved to the mainland and requested land grants there. Now, when staying in hotels Miami visitors will find it to be one of the most fun loving cities around.

Visitors who plan to be in Miami for any length of time may be interested in taking a sub-vacation on the Celebrity Cruises.
